Day 39 - Escape from Santa Fe to Flagstaff

It's 7am and a huge snowstorm is brewing. Our courtyard got a dusting overnight, and it's very cold. The weather people say it could last for days and feature high winds and freezing rain to boot. We reluctantly decide to leave Santa Fe a day early and beat a retreat to Flagstaff, hopefully closer to nice weather, and our next stop, Palm Springs.

Almost packed to go - Emma's wondering what happened to te sunshine.

Our little neighborhood in the snow - I will miss the absolute quiet and peacefulness of this place.

Snow or not - the job's got to be done.

We clear Albuquerque without incident - it's cold but no freezing rain or snow. The folks at 66 Pit Stop make hand cut cooked to order french fries. We weren't hungry enought to try them - but did they ever smell good!!

I think all they feel is the -15C windchill.

I thought this was a rest stop. It looks like the back of a gas station. In the wind.

Paralleling I40 is good ol' Route 66. Or what's left of it.

This is the actual Centre of the Universe. The locals don't like to make a big deal of it, but here it is.

Such an odd name for a town.

I'm wondering if this one's on it's way in, or out?

The El Rancho is a landmark route 66 fixture - these days they're featuring "merican slang" - something Taco Bell up the street can't match - no how.

Lowest motel price seen on this trip. You couldn't get a cheap fleabag for this price even 25 years ago! Wonder what you get at the Redwood for $2 more?

This would be the new all-time record holder for America's Cheapest Motel, but it appears boarded up. The rules for Cheapest Motel are clear: it must be open for business. This year's low point is $23.95. In Gallup.

The welcome mat has been rolled out in Arizona.

The crazy weather persists - the skies have been agitated all day but we've had very little precipitation. Temperatures along the drive have ranged from -5C to 9C.

Searchlights beam down from above looking for non-believers.

Wendy spots the Velociraptor and hits the gas. Those things are fast!

Sun Valley.

Arizona's secret experimental biosphere terraforming plant. This plant is designed to pump out large amounts of CO2 to support the activity of introduced cyanobacteria as the first step in creating a breathable atmosphere.
